"Art does not reproduce the visible, rather it makes visible."
I am a painter trying to get people to forget what painting is,
..a musician seeking to make people forget what music is..
"Great art occurs..only when a painter manages to invent
forms capable of assuming, for those who have seen them,
the function of myths."
paintings in black and white
I looked at the world
and saw something that is, and something that isn't,
and I said to myself,
"There must be more than this."
"The myth is the public dream and the dream is the private myth."
I prefer black-and-white because, as Colin McGinn says,
it is more "psychologically realistic."
and I want my paintings to be "as real as a dream is when one is dreaming."

"If the artist believes that life is and will remain essentially mysterious, then what is seen on the surface will be of interest only if one can go through it into an experience of mystery itself."
"Similitude in dissimilitude,
and dissimilitude in similitude."
"To break down the distinctions between the I and the not-I."

drawing and illustration
Drawings "have a particular merit.
They draw the viewer.
into a world of wonder.
Therein lies the enchanting effect
of a successful picture.
It can be as exciting to own one as
it is to own a talking dog."
When my drawings are
successful they can startle a
person, cause sudden laughter,
or even elicit wonder or awe.
I call them "awful" drawings.
